What the Togeans are
The Togean Islands (also spelled Togian Islands) are an archipelago of roughly 56 islands and islets scattered across the middle of the Gulf of Tomini, Central Sulawesi — a ninety-kilometre run of reef, rainforest, and Bajau stilt villages between the mainland ports of Ampana and Gorontalo. They sit in the heart of the Coral Triangle, and they are one of the few places on earth where all four reef types — fringing, barrier, patch, and atoll — occur in a single archipelago. There are no ATMs, almost no roads, and no fast way in. The islands suit the traveller who will trade convenience for that: divers, snorkellers, honeymooners, and anyone content to read a book between boats.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Togean Islands safe to visit?
Yes. The Togean Islands are generally safe for tourists. The local communities are welcoming, and the area sees a steady flow of both domestic and international visitors. As with any remote destination, it helps to be prepared — carry cash (ATMs are limited), bring basic medications, and let someone know your itinerary. The practical details are covered in our free money, ATMs and internet guide.
How do I get to the Togean Islands?
There are no direct flights to the Togean Islands. Most visitors fly into Gorontalo or Luwuk, then take a combination of overland transport and ferry or speedboat. The most popular route is via Ampana, which has the fastest boat connections. Every route, schedule, and price is laid out in our free getting-there guide, checked on the ground in the islands.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Book ahead if you can, especially during peak season (June to September) and around Indonesian holidays. Many resorts have limited capacity, and most need advance notice to arrange meals and boat pickups. Togean.com is a reference, not a booking service: you contact each resort directly — usually on WhatsApp — using the contact details on its listing, and confirm your stay with the owner.
What is the best time to visit the Togean Islands?
The Togean Islands can be visited year-round, but the driest months are typically March to October. Diving visibility is generally best from March to June and September to November. The wet season (November to February) brings more rain, but the islands remain beautiful and less crowded. Water temperatures stay warm throughout the year.
Do I need diving experience to enjoy the Togean Islands?
Not at all. While the Togean Islands are a world-class diving destination, there is plenty to enjoy without diving. Snorkeling is excellent at many resorts, and you can explore jellyfish lakes, mangrove forests, Bajo stilt villages, and pristine beaches. Several resorts also offer beginner dive courses if you want to try it for the first time.
