Li An Homestay is a 100% local initiative run by Li An, who grew up on Pulau Papan — a Bajau fishing village built entirely on stilts over the sea next to Malenge island. Staying here means sharing the family's daily life: rooms are simple village-house rooms, meals are the day's catch cooked by the family, and the famous kilometre-long boardwalk to Malenge starts practically at the door. Healthy coral reefs sit directly in front of the homestay, and the host arranges boat trips to the jellyfish lake, the Kabalutan sea-nomad village, white-sand beaches, traditional spearfishing and jungle treks on Malenge. This is a true off-grid stay: generator electricity runs roughly 6–10 pm, there is no wifi and only very weak phone signal, and there is no ATM — bring enough cash from Ampana or Gorontalo. Rates aren't published; book direct via WhatsApp (the host speaks English, French and Indonesian).

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Li An Homestay on Pulau Papan?

The cheapest way is the direct public boat from Ampana to Pulau Papan, departing Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9:00 AM (about 5 hours). Alternatively, take the daily Hercules speedboat from Ampana to Wakai (~1.5 hours) and arrange a local boat from Wakai to Pulau Papan. Schedules change — confirm with the host on WhatsApp.

Is there electricity and wifi?

Electricity comes from a generator, generally available 6 PM to 10 PM — charge batteries then. There is no wifi and Telkomsel mobile signal is very weak, so plan to disconnect.

How much does it cost and how do I book?

Rates aren't published online; this is a budget village homestay, so expect typical Togean homestay pricing with meals included. Book and confirm prices directly with the host on WhatsApp at +62 878 7395 7285 (English, French and Indonesian spoken). Bring enough cash — there's no ATM on the islands.

What can I do there?

Snorkel the reefs directly in front of the homestay, take boat trips to the jellyfish lake and the Bajau stilt village of Kabalutan, try traditional spearfishing, visit white-sand beaches, and trek through Malenge's primary jungle with a local guide. (Note: dive-operator reports from 2024 suggest the jellyfish-lake population declined sharply, so manage expectations.)
