Island Retreat has been running since the late 1990s on a quiet stretch of Batudaka's west coast beyond Bomba, which makes it both the westernmost resort in the archipelago and the quickest to reach from Ampana — daily public speedboats (9:00 and 12:00) will drop you at the resort if you tell the ticket seller in advance. Twelve wooden cottages sit along a lawn behind a 400-metre private beach: seven beachfront units with king beds, hammock-strung verandas and private mandi bathrooms, two two-level family cottages, a honeymoon cottage, and two cheaper garden cottages with a shared bathroom. Power comes from a generator (a few daytime hours plus sunset to about 11pm) backed by small solar panels; there is no air conditioning and effectively no signal or wifi. Rates are per person with full board, and the kitchen is the standout — bread and pasta made in-house, fish bought straight from local fishermen; children 6–12 pay half. The resort historically ran its own PADI dive operation with around 20 sites within 35 minutes — worth confirming when you book, as the resort's website has gone offline and its footprint is Tripadvisor and Facebook only. How do I get to Island Retreat?
It's the closest resort to Ampana. Take the daily public speedboat from Ampana's main terminal (9:00 or 12:00) and tell the ticket seller you're going to Island Retreat so the boat routes past the resort; the same applies from Wakai. A slower public ferry has run from near Marina Cottages on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings (a 2020-era schedule — confirm locally), and private speedboat charters can be arranged.
